Salisbury Civitan Update The Past 25 Years
The charter for the Civitan Club of Salisbury was issued on August 15, 1922. It was the ninth Civitan Club organized in North Carolina. Charter Night was September 5, 1922 with the Charlotte Civitan Club as sponsor. The Clubs first president was William Hennessee. Vice President was Charles L. Coggin, Bryan Clark was Secretary, Thomas Foreman, Treasurer and Fred Young, Sgt-At-Arms.
Present member, Dr. D. Clyde Young, Jr., joined the club in August 1947 on the occasion of the clubs observance of its 25th anniversary. The meeting place, at that time, was the old Yadkin Hotel. The Youngs were the first father and son members and both served terms as President.
A History of the Salisbury Civitan Club was published on the occasion of its 50th anniversary in 1972. The anniversary was celebrated with a formal program at the Crystal Lounge, now known as the Clifford A. Peeler Crystal Lounge of the Robertson College-Community Center. International President William Haehnet, Jr. addressed the assembled Civitans. Entertainment was "Civitan Fifty Years in Retrospect" by David Clay and Company, known as the Clay Art Players.
During the first 50 years, the Salisbury Civitan Club supplied leadership to Civitan International. Rev. Milton Faust served two terms as International chaplain. Fred Jordan served as International Director of Junior Civitan and Don Dearborn served as North Carolina District Governor.
During the past 25 years, the tradition has continued. M. M. "Chub" Richards has served as North Carolina Governor and as International President and Curtis Montgomery as North Carolina District West Governor.
During Chubs year as International President, Civitan expanded overseas by chartering the first Civitan Clubs in Japan and in South Korea. In the same term, two major changes were brought about in the world of Civitan when women were welcomed to join Civitan and the Civitan calendar was changed from July 1-June 30 to October 1 September 30. Officers serving that year had to serve 15 months. Therefore, Curtis Montgomery served the longest term of anyone as Governor of N.C. District West. During his term, after women were invited to join in the work of Civitan, Curtis Montgomery chartered the first ladies club in Civitan International The Pioneer Ladies of Boone.
Besides the 50th anniversary, 1972 saw the establishment of the Salisbury Civitan annual Good Samaritan Award. The Catawba College Scholarship program was expanded from its original Music scholarship to include additional scholarships in Education at Catawba College and Livingstone College and to degree and practical nursing programs at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College.
