Vol. 53, Issue 45;
August 30th 2001
On August 23rd, 2001, we welcomed Mr.
T.J.Orr, Aviation Director / General Manager
of Charlotte Douglas International
Airport.
Jerry's candidness was refreshing, his humor sharp as a tack, and his vision for
the future of the airport remarkable.
A most accomplished speaker, and a pleasure to listen to.
With the help of his assistant Jack Cristine, Jerry showed slides of
planned expansions to the airport, including a new
international terminal, a new regional terminal, access roads, commuter train
station, rail freight yards, shops, and parking lots.
The total new investment could reach one billion dollars. Mr. Orr was keen to
point out that not a penny of taxpayers' money is used in the capital
expenditure of CLT. The airport generates $4 billion a year in revenues,
and 71,000 jobs, or 8% of the Charlotte region's workforce. (Equivalent to
100% of Rowan County's workforce as a matter of interest.)
The cost of 'processing' one passenger is $1.16 at Charlotte compared to $6.75
in Pittsburgh. The airport sees 23 million passengers each year, which
ranks it as the 20th busiest airport in the nation. 65% of those fly U.S.
Air.
(Editor's Note:- I was particularly pleased to
hear about the international terminal expansion. Apparently it takes me 90
minutes to get through the terminal because 3 planes all arrive within five
minutes of each other carrying 1200 passengers when the terminal was only
planned to handle 400. During construction it might make sense for the
airlines to spread out arrival times to save us standing in line at customs for
an hour).
PS If your browser supports it, this font is called "Terminal".

THE
DIFFERENCE
CIVITANS MAKE
Last week
local residents flocked to help find a bone marrow match for local child Amanda
Washko.
Organizers
ran out of money. Our board and
membership acted immediately and voted to send $450 to help fund the drive.
We gave the money to Godstock in honor of Scott Smith, our club member
who died of Leukemia 4 years ago.
NOTA BENE:- If you bring a guest who is not a
potential member, it’s your responsibility to tell the treasurer or secretary
to charge your account for their lunch.
The Country Club charges us by how many plates we use;
if our club has to foot the bill for a couple of extra meals each week,
that’s a thousand dollars a year we don’t have to spend on our projects.
*If your
name is on the imminent program list, please arrange a speaker at least 4 weeks
in advance.

Gold Hill’s deepest gold
mine was drilled in 1855, to an eventual depth of over 800 ft.
It was named for a NC landowner and the County of “Randolph”. Rev
Bill Adams was the first to excavate Randolph from the depths.
